Goal Kick - See Law 16 for details

When the offensive team kicks or deflects the ball out of play at the goal line but not in the goal, the defensive team is awarded a goal kick to restart play. The ball is placed anywhere within the "small" goal area box. A defensive player takes the kick and ball can not be touched by any player until it clears the big penalty box box. All offensive players must be outside the big penalty box. The ball can not be played by any player until it has fully left the big box. The kicker can not kick it again until someone else has touched the ball. Any defensive player can kick a goal kick. Some let their goalie take the kick and many, particularly in younger age groups, have a defensive player kick it. It is well advised not to kick the ball into the middle to avoid the probability of an unfriendly return. Keep in mind, in younger leagues, there's a lot of traffic in the middle and the kicks generally lack the power or accuracy to properly clear the ball. The odds of a happier defensive ending are clearly better when kicked to the sides.
